Generic Propecia (Finasteride)

Hair Loss, Men's Health

Generic Propecia is used to treat androgenic alopecia in men, also known as male pattern baldness or hereditary hair loss. Its sole active ingredient is finasteride, an anti-androgen blocking the conversion of the male hormone testosterone into hair follicle-harming dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Finasteride tablet

What is Propecia/finasteride?

FINASTERIDE, the only active ingredient of Propecia, can reduce the size of the prostate gland in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and was, therefore, originally used to treat enlarged prostates. Its hair growth promoting properties were discovered in the 1990s. Finasteride's mechanism of action is to block 5 alpha-reductase, an enzyme responsible for converting the male hormone testosterone into DHT. The harmful effects of DHT are thought to be the main cause of prostate gland enlargement as well as hereditary baldness. So the result of using Propecia (finasteride) is to protect your hair follicles from DHT attacks. A regular dosage of Propecia can reduce the amount of DHT in the human body by up to 90%. If treatment with finasteride is abandoned, the DHT levels rise and the balding process resumes. Propecia is frequently being prescribed by hair transplant surgeons as a maintenance treatment to patients after hair transplant surgery in order to avoid further loss of hair in areas  adjacent to hair transplant and thus to prevent the need for additional surgery.

What should my health care professional know before I take Propecia (finasteride)?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • if you are female (finasteride is not for use in women)
  • kidney disease or infection
  • liver disease
  • prostate cancer
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to finasteride, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

How should I take Propecia (finasteride)?

Take finasteride tablets by mouth. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. You can take them with or without food. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take Propecia (finasteride) more often than directed.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine immediately contact a poison control center or emergency unit.

NOTE: This medication is only for you. Do not share it with others.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If you do not remember until the next day, take only that day's dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

What should I watch for while taking Propecia (finasteride)?

Do not donate blood until at least 6 months after your final dose of Propecia (finasteride). This will prevent giving finasteride to a pregnant female through a blood transfusion.

Contact your prescriber or health care professional if there is no improvement in your condition. You may need to take Propecia (finasteride) for 6 to 12 months to see tangible results.

Women who are pregnant or may get pregnant must not handle broken or crushed Propecia tablets; the active ingredient, finasteride, could harm the unborn baby. If a pregnant woman comes in contact with broken or crushed finasteride tablets she should check with her health care professional. Exposure to the whole tablets is not expected to cause harm as long as they are not swallowed.

Finasteride can interfere with PSA laboratory tests for prostate cancer. If you are scheduled to have a lab test for prostate cancer, tell your prescriber or health care professional that you are taking Propecia.

What may interact with Propecia (finasteride)?

  • some blood pressure medications
  • male hormones (example: testosterone)
  • saw palmetto
  • soy isoflavones supplements

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medications you are taking, including non-prescription medicines. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before abandoning or starting any of your medicines.

What side effects may I expect from using Propecia (finasteride)?

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report them to your prescriber or health care professional if they are persistent or become bothersome):

  • breast enlargement or tenderness
  • skin rash
  • sexual difficulties (less sexual desire or ability to get an erection)
  • small amount of semen released during sex

This list may not describe all possible side effects of Propecia.

Where should I keep Propecia?

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Protect from light. Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medication after the expiration date.
